Color Theory

“Life is gray and dull; you might as well have a little fun when you dress.” -Iris Apfel

One time I was asked to do a video modeling shoot for a local company here in town. They specified where to be and when, and also to bring some neutral clothing from my own wardrobe to wear along with the accessories I would be modeling. No joke you guys, I stood in front of my closet for 30 minutes trying to find an outfit made up of only neutrals. I kept reaching for a piece only to remember it had those kelly green flowers on the front of it or it had some funky print on bottom. Needless to say, I am not a stranger to bright colors and patterns and I believe that they only get better and more interesting when mixed together. I think that people who only stick to neutrals are missing out on so many fun and exciting pieces by not wearing more color. Of course we all have our own style and comfort level with fashion, but I hate for someone to miss out on something great because of a silly old comfort zone.

Maybe you are reading this and saying to yourself, “Ugh, I really want to wear more color, but I don’t know where to start!” Start by wearing a neutral that has a colored pattern, such as black blouse with a muted red floral print or black jeans with navy blue stripes down the side seams. This will help gradually take you out of your comfort zone without removing all of your neutrals from you at once like a kid addicted to sugar. Once you feel comfortable with this little color addition, start adding in colors without the neutrals: Red/Pink top with black denim. So on and so on until you can comfortably and confidently wear an all color outfit without the addition of a neutral/muted color. And don’t get discouraged! Trail and error (aka: trying on so many pieces from your closet that it looks like a factory blew up in your room) is a natural process of figuring out your style. It’s all about taking small steps that lead up to a big change in your confidence and in yourself!

Affectionately, Audrey ❤
